Hungry for the Word of God
Scripture: "One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God." — Luke 5:1
Jesus had only recently begun His public ministry, yet wherever He went, crowds gathered around Him. They were not merely curious about the miracles He performed. Luke tells us that they were crowding around Him to listen to the Word of God.
The scene is striking. It was probably very early in the morning. The fishermen, including Peter, James, and John, had just returned from a long night's work and were washing their nets, a task usually done at daybreak after fishing through the night. This suggests it may have been around sunrise, perhaps between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. Before most people would have begun their daily routines, many had already gathered by the lakeshore because they did not want to miss hearing Jesus speak.
His Presence
The people crowded around Him. They simply wanted to be near Jesus. His presence drew them. They were not content to admire Him from a distance; they wanted to be as close as possible.
This speaks of our relationship with Christ. Christianity is more than believing certain truths or performing religious duties. At its heart, it is a relationship with Jesus. He invites us to abide in Him, walk with Him, and enjoy His presence.
Many believers seek God's blessings but neglect His presence. Yet throughout Scripture, God's greatest gift to His people has always been Himself.
Moses understood this when he prayed, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here" (Exodus 33:15).
David expressed the same longing: "One thing I ask from the Lord... that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life" (Psalm 27:4).
Do we long to spend time with Jesus simply because we love Him?
His Word
The crowd not only gathered around Jesus—they listened to the Word of God. They recognised that His words brought life, truth, hope, and direction. They came with hearts that were teachable and eager to hear.
Their hunger challenges us. They were willing to rise early, leave the comfort of their homes, and stand by the shore simply to hear God's Word. They recognised that what Jesus offered was more valuable than sleep, work, or convenience.
Today, we have something they did not have, we possess the complete Scriptures, and many of us have access to them at any time on our phones, computers, or in printed Bibles. Yet it is possible to have abundant access to God's Word and still neglect it. The problem is often not a lack of opportunity but a lack of spiritual hunger.
Jesus later declared - "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."- Matthew 4:4
Just as our bodies need daily food, our souls need daily nourishment from God's Word. A healthy appetite is a sign of spiritual life. When we hunger for God, we will make time for Him. We will not see reading the Bible as a duty but as a delight. We will long to hear His voice because we know that His Word brings wisdom, strength, correction, comfort, and life.
The crowds by the lake remind us that true satisfaction is found in God's presence and in His truth. May we cultivate the same desire that drew them to Jesus so early in the morning. May His Word become our first priority each day rather than an afterthought.
A growing Christian is one who continually draws near to Christ and allows His Word to shape every area of life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me into Your presence. Forgive me when I become distracted by the busyness of life and lose my desire to be near You. Create in me a heart that longs for Your presence and hungers for Your Word. Teach me to sit at Your feet, to listen carefully to Your voice, and to obey what You say. May my life be marked by intimacy with You and faithfulness to Your truth. In Your name I pray. Amen.
