Leadership and Evangelism Training in Yangon 28-29 Oct

Image
I was invited to facilitate this training program for pastors and Bible School Students. The last time I visited Yagon was during my airforce days, about twenty years ago. One can sense a visible difference. Many new buildings have come up although the city center was relatively the same.  The training was organized by Sis Evelyn (Singapore) and Pst John Phongshar in Myanmar. Pst John was a participant of the HI Leadership program held in Chiang Mai, Thailand last year. It was divine intervention how Sis Evelyn met Pst John and how this whole seminar came to being. About 70 pastors and Bible School students came for this program. I took six sessions over two days, teaching on leadership and evangelism. Pst John helped with the translation. Initially the participants were rather reticent but they slowly opened up and we had a good time of learning and sharing. On the last session we opened up the time for prayer and dedication. The Spirit of the Lo

In meditation

Prov 14:12 - There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.   There are always many options we face in life, many people we meet and many things to choose from.  They all seem right in their own ways. This is especially so when some one wants to invest in the stock market and get carried away by the promised returns, but not realizing the risks involved. It can also be in choosing the right partner, the right career, the right friends, the right investments and so on. Usually the ones that are very attractive may not be the one God intends us to choose. Proverbs warns us that the danger in choosing the wrong way is that it may end up in "death" Samuel was a case in point. He wanted to choose a king to replace Saul. He goes to the house of Jesse as directed by the Lord. He was tempted to choose the first few. But God intervened and said in 1 Sam 16:7 - man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. You see Samuel was

Invest where the returns are the highest

Luke 15:7 - I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Its quite interesting to see how people invest their money. Good economic sense will tell us to put the money where the returns are the most secured and highest. Nevertheless even the most experienced stockbroker cannot give you a hundred percent assurance that what is invested in a particular counter in the market will certainly be always in the black territory. There are inherent risks involved.  But sadly the trend has filtered down into today's modern churches as well. Millions are spent on buildings, furnishing, celebrations and the likes. All these at a depreciating cost.Yes these may be important provided they are balanced with with is important and what is necessary. Expenditure on the temporary without due investment in the eternal is bad in every sense. But Jesus in Mathew 6:19-21 -

Missing the forest for the trees

I was reading John 6 on the incident where Jesus fed the five thousand. Two things stretched my mind: Verse 2 - and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.   Verse 7 -  Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages  to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” The crowd followed Jesus for the wrong reasons. They realized that Jesus was able to solve their temporary short-term needs. They thought that Jesus can set them free form the slavery of the Romans. He would solve the economic crisis and the social injustice. No wonder they wanted to make him king (verse 15). They did not see him as the Messiah or the savior of the world.  The sad reality today is that many follow Jesus for the wrong reasons too. To some he is their bread supplier, to others : someone to cling on to in difficult situations. For many, He is their vending machine. "Call him in times of trouble". Oth
