Great is your faithfulness
Lamentations 3:22-23 - Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations in Hebrew is "Eikah" which means "How." It is believed that this book was written by the prophet Jeremiah. The book contains five poems that laments over the condition of the city of Jerusalem. The people of Israel and Judah failed to regard the many warnings the Lord made, asking them to repent of their sins. But they did not. The city was burnt to the ground and utterly demolished by the Babylonians in 586 BC, in contrast to the magnificent splendour that it once possessed.
The reason for God's chastisement on the people of Judah and on the city of Jerusalem are spelled out in the form of an appeal made to God to remember the great suffering of his people.
In spite of the terrible situation in captivity, the prophet was still able to see the heart of God and His love for His people. God still longs after them even when they had deliberately wandered away from Him.
Three of God's character stands out in relation to His people:
- Love
- Mercy
- Faithfulness
