Great is your faithfulness

Lamentations 3:22-23 - Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations in Hebrew is "Eikah" which means "How." It is believed that this book was written by the prophet Jeremiah. The book contains five poems that laments over the condition of the city of Jerusalem. The people of Israel and Judah failed to regard the many warnings the Lord made, asking them to repent of their sins. But they did not. The city was burnt to the ground and utterly demolished by the Babylonians in 586 BC, in contrast to the magnificent splendour that it once possessed. 

The reason for God's chastisement on the people of Judah and on the city of Jerusalem are spelled out in the form of an appeal made to God to remember the great suffering of his people.

In spite of the terrible situation in captivity, the prophet was still able to see the heart of God and His love for His people. God still longs after them even when they had deliberately wandered away from Him. 

Three of God's character stands out in relation to His people:

  • Love
  • Mercy
  • Faithfulness
In His love, He reaches out to His people, although it should be the other way round. He was the "offended" but yet His love propels Him to take the role of the "offender", extending the arm for reconciliation. In doing so, He humbled Himself and took the form of a man (Phi 2:7-8), took our place on the cross.

In His mercy, He extends His forgives when His people repent and turn towards Him. He redeemed us from the slave market of sin and extended the position of sonship to us.

In His faithfulness, He will never leave us nor forsake us. He remains true and faithful.  Even when e don't keep our part of the covenant, He remains faithful.

The prophet says they are new every morning. Every day is a new encounter into the character of God. There is forgiveness, there's joy and hope everyday as we come boldly into this throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16)

In our daily journey, let's remember the God we serve is a Great God and we are a life today because of His love, mercy and faithfulness.
