Psalm 33:18 – “Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.”
Yesterday morning, I shared this verse with some friends. But as I began to take a deeper look at it, I realised that it had so much more to offer than I had initially understood. What began as a simple verse to encourage others became a personal reminder of God's watchful care over my own life.
Psalm 33 is a psalm of praise that celebrates the sovereignty, faithfulness and greatness of God. It reminds us that the Lord is not only the Creator of the heavens and the earth, but also a God who is personally concerned about the lives of His people. He is not a distant God who simply observes what is happening in the world. He is a loving Father who watches over those who fear Him and place their hope in His unfailing mercy.
Sometimes, in the busyness of life, we can become so overwhelmed by the pressures around us that we lose sight of the One who is watching over us. There are pressures at the workplace, responsibilities within the family, challenges in ministry and even personal struggles that we may not be able to share with anyone. We often try to resolve these matters through our own strength, wisdom and confidence. In the process, we become anxious, stressed and emotionally exhausted.
Yet, this verse reminds me of a wonderful truth: In spite of everything that happens around us, God has never taken His eyes off us.
His eyes are upon us, not merely to observe our circumstances, but to watch over us with love, compassion and divine purpose.
As I reflected on this verse, I was reminded of a few things about God's watchful eyes.
1. His eyes are upon us to watch over us
Imagine a father watching his young child take his first steps. The child is still learning to balance, and every step is uncertain. The father does not take his eyes off the child. He watches attentively, ready to reach out if the child stumbles or falls.
The child may not even be aware of the dangers around him, but the father is. His eyes are constantly fixed on the child, not because he expects the child to fail, but because he wants to ensure that the child is safe.
This is a beautiful picture of our Heavenly Father.
There are times when we step into unfamiliar situations, face difficult decisions or encounter challenges for which we have no immediate answers. We may feel uncertain about tomorrow, wondering how things will turn out. But while we are trying to understand what lies ahead, God already sees the bigger picture.
God sees what we cannot see, knows what we do not know and understands what we cannot comprehend.
Psalm 121:3–4 reminds us that the One who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. Unlike human beings, whose attention can be distracted and whose strength can be exhausted, God's watchful care never ceases.
There may be moments when we feel alone in our struggles, but we are never beyond the reach of His eyes. Even when nobody understands what we are going through, God knows. Even when we cannot explain our burdens to others, He understands the condition of our hearts.
Perhaps today, you are facing a situation that seems too difficult to handle. You may be worried about your family, concerned about your future or carrying responsibilities that are becoming increasingly overwhelming.
Remember that the God who watches over you is greater than the circumstances that surround you.
2. His eyes are upon us to protect us
One of the comforting truths about God's watchful eyes is that He sees dangers that we may never recognise.
When we travel along a road, we may be able to see only what is directly in front of us. We are unaware of what may be approaching from another direction, what lies beyond a blind corner or what dangers may be hidden from our view.
But God sees beyond our immediate circumstances. He knows what is happening around us, what is unfolding behind the scenes and what lies ahead of us.
There are times when God protects us by preventing certain things from happening. There are also times when He allows us to go through difficult experiences but sustains us in the midst of them.
We may never fully understand how many dangers He has shielded us from, how many wrong decisions He has prevented us from making or how many situations He has quietly brought us through.
Psalm 34:7 says, “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”
God's protection does not mean that we will never experience difficulties, disappointments or pain. The Bible is filled with faithful men and women who went through tremendous trials. Yet, God's presence remained with them through every circumstance.
Sometimes, when we look back at our lives, we begin to recognise that certain disappointments were actually God's protection, certain delays were His preparation and certain closed doors were His way of redirecting us.
At the time, we may have questioned God, wondering why things did not happen according to our expectations. Only much later may we realise that His wisdom was greater than our understanding.
We may not always understand God's ways, but we can always trust His heart.
His eyes are upon us, and His protection is not limited to what we can see or understand.
3. His eyes are upon us to correct us
When we use a GPS while driving, it guides us towards our intended destination. Sometimes, we miss a turn, take the wrong road or fail to follow the suggested route. The GPS does not simply abandon us because we have made a mistake. It recalculates the route and directs us towards the destination again.
In a much greater way, God watches over our lives and lovingly redirects us when we go astray.
There are times when we make decisions based on our own understanding, emotions or personal preferences. We may be sincere in our intentions but still end up making the wrong choices. We may become impatient, act impulsively or pursue something that is not aligned with God's will.
Yet, God's watchful eyes are upon us even in our moments of failure.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
God's correction is not a sign of rejection. It is an expression of His love and fatherly concern. Hebrews 12:6 tells us that the Lord disciplines those He loves.
A loving father does not correct his child to humiliate or destroy him. He corrects him because he wants him to grow, mature and walk in the right direction.
Likewise, God may use His Word, the prompting of the Holy Spirit, the counsel of godly people or even the circumstances of life to redirect our steps.
There may be moments when the Holy Spirit convicts us of our attitudes, exposes our pride or reminds us of areas in which we need to change. Instead of resisting His correction, we should respond with humility and allow Him to lead us back to His ways.
God is not merely interested in where we are going; He is also concerned about who we are becoming along the way.
How comforting it is to know that even when we make mistakes, God's grace is sufficient to restore us, and His wisdom is able to redirect our steps.
4. His eyes are upon us to sustain us
There are seasons in life when the challenges we face seem greater than our ability to cope. We may have reached a point where we have exhausted our own resources, explored every possible solution and still find ourselves without an answer.
It is often in such moments that we realise how much we need God.
Psalm 33:18 does not say that God's eyes are upon those who have everything under control. It says that His eyes are upon those who fear Him and hope in His mercy.
Our hope, therefore, is not in our own ability, qualifications, financial resources or human connections. Our hope is in the mercy of God.
Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that it is because of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, and that His compassions are new every morning.
God knows our limitations. He knows when we are tired, when our hearts are burdened and when our strength is failing. He understands the silent struggles that we may conceal behind our smiles.
Just as a shepherd watches over his sheep and ensures that they have the care they need, our Heavenly Father knows when we need His strength, His comfort and His provision.
Isaiah 40:29 says, “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”
Sometimes, God changes our circumstances. At other times, He gives us the grace and strength to endure them. He may not always remove the burden immediately, but He promises to sustain us as we walk through it.
We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we can rest in the assurance that the One who holds tomorrow is watching over us today.
When our strength is insufficient, His grace is sufficient. When our wisdom is limited, His understanding is unlimited. And when our hope is fading, His mercy remains unfailing.
A personal reminder
As I reflect on this verse, I am reminded that life is not always predictable. There are responsibilities to fulfil, decisions to make, challenges to overcome and uncertainties that we cannot control.
We often spend so much time looking at our problems that we forget to look to the God who watches over us. We become so occupied with finding solutions that we forget to seek His wisdom. We become so concerned about what may happen tomorrow that we fail to appreciate His faithfulness today.
Yet, Psalm 33:18 brings us back to a simple but profound truth: The eyes of the Lord are upon us.
He watches over us when we are strong and when we are weak. He sees us when we succeed and when we fail. He guides us when we know where we are going and redirects us when we lose our way. He protects us from dangers we recognise and those we may never even know existed.
However, this promise is specifically given to those who fear Him and hope in His mercy. To fear the Lord is to honour Him, reverence Him and seek to live according to His will. To hope in His mercy is to place our confidence not in our own righteousness or abilities, but in His unfailing love and faithfulness.
Perhaps we need to pause today and remind ourselves that we do not have to carry every burden on our own. We do not need to have all the answers, nor do we need to control every outcome.
Our responsibility is to remain faithful, trust Him and walk in obedience. The responsibility of watching over us belongs to our faithful Heavenly Father.
The eyes that watched over us yesterday are still watching over us today, and they will continue to watch over us tomorrow.
May this truth give us peace in the midst of uncertainty, courage in the face of challenges and confidence to trust Him even when we do not understand what He is doing.
Let us not be so overwhelmed by what is happening around us that we lose sight of the God whose eyes are always upon us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Your eyes are always upon me. Forgive me for the many times I have become overwhelmed by the pressures of life and relied on my own strength and understanding. Help me to trust You more, knowing that You see what I cannot see and understand what I cannot comprehend. Watch over my family, guide my decisions, protect me from unseen dangers and lovingly correct me whenever I stray from Your ways. When I am weak, be my strength; when I am anxious, be my peace; and when I am uncertain, help me to rest in Your unfailing mercy. May I continue to walk in reverence before You and place my hope in Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
