Xmas?

Image
All this took place to fulfil   what the Lord had said through the prophet:   “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”   (which means “God with us”)   -  Matthew 1:22-23   For many years, I believed that writing   Xmas   meant removing Christ from Christmas. In a world where faith is often sidelined, it felt like the letter “X” stood for the unknown, something impersonal and misplaced. After all, Christ is not unknown; He is the very centre of Christmas. It wasn’t until someone explained the true meaning behind the “X” that my understanding changed, revealing not a loss of reverence, but a deeper historical connection to Christ Himself.   For many, the word  “Xmas”  feels incomplete, as if Christ has been removed from Christmas. But the truth is far richer and far more beautiful.   The  “X” is not an erasure . It is a declaration.   In Greek, the language of the New Testament...

The danger when emotions speak louder than words

So Moses took the staff   from the   Lord ’s presence,   just as he commanded him.   He and Aaron gathered the assembly together   in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”   Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water   gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.  But the   Lord   said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honour me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”  –  Number 20:9-11   There are moments in life when the loudest voice in the room isn’t God’s instruction or the enemy’s opposition, but our own emotions.   The Christian journey is not a one-time decision; it is a daily surrender. Jesus said,  “Take up your cross daily and follow Me.”  That means choosing obedience repeatedly, even whe...

The Confession of Elizabeth

Image
“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”-  Luke 1:25 (NIV)   Have there been seasons in your life when you prayed earnestly, fasted faithfully, and did everything you knew to do—yet God seemed silent? After a long period of waiting and hoping, you may have quietly concluded that God was not going to answer that prayer. Perhaps you even resigned yourself to the thought that this was simply not His will.   Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, were likely in a similar place. They had prayed, waited, and remained faithful, yet the answer did not come when they expected it. Over time, they may have accepted that God had chosen a different path for them—only to discover later that God’s silence was not His absence, and delay was not denial.   When everything seemed negative and every natural indicator pointed to impossibility, God stepped into their story and declared that their prayer h...

Christmas meetings in Berastagi, Medan

Image
I was in Berastagi , Medan from 17-19 Dec. I was invited by Bishop Ezra to speak at their Christmas program . This time I took Air Asia and routed via KL as the airfares ha skyrocketed due to the festive season. I took the local transport to Berastagi from Medan, even though Bishop Ezra and his wife Janice insisted that they will book a cab for me. They are such wonderful couple and excellent hosts. I often dreaded going to their home as I always put on 2 kg when I get back😂😂 I arrived at Mt Zion about 3 pm and Bishop asked if I could share the Word at the prayer meeting that evening. The prayer meeting was at 5pm Oh how I missed the prayer meetings. About 60 people gathered for the prayer and the meeting was just like how we used to have in the 80’s. Bishop said that usually about 100 people attend the prayer every week. That’s impressive. There was liberty in the Spirit and the Lord moved very powerfully. I shared on how God answered the prayer of Zachariah and Elizabeth. Afte...

My favourite US President

Image
They called him weak. History called him great. He carried his own luggage.  Taught Sunday school.  Wore cardigans instead of power suits. Washington never quite knew what to do with Jimmy Carter. He was dismissed as a failure — and yet he saved countless lives by asking two sworn enemies one simple question: “What will you tell your grandchildren?” In September 1978, a quiet peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, achieved what decades of power politics could not. He brought Egypt and Israel — enemies for more than 30 years — to the table and helped forge a peace that still holds today. The Camp David Accords were not born from political brilliance or clever maneuvering.  They happened because Jimmy Carter believed that peace was worth any personal cost — even his presidency. And he paid that price. His approval ratings collapsed.  The Iran hostage crisis destroyed his chances of re-election.  In 1980, he lost in a landslide. Many would have grown bitter. Carter di...

Sunday service at ALFC

Image
This morning Jeya and I were at Abundant Life Family Church in Ang Mo Kio. Senior Pastor Allan Ang had invited us to preach this Sunday. It's always a joy to be back here. Many of the members have become friends with us. My message today was entitled: When Hope Seems Out of Reach . Looking at the of Zachariah and Elizabeth.  Most of the time we hear sermons about Zachariah as a man without faith and who was punished due to its lack. Today I took the text from a different angle as a couple who were  righteous,    blameless . and o bedient (Luke 1:6). Between the Book of Malachi in the Old Testament and the Book of Matthew in the New Testament, was a period of 400 years and  God  has not spoken in the last 400 years. When God decided to break His 400-year silence, he did it: Not to a king Not to a prophet like Moses or Elijah, Not to a famous priest like Samuel, Not    a philosopher   But to an old, aged, couple Zachariah and Eli...
