Justified by Faith - Peace with God
Romans 5:1 (NIV) - "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
This verse was the foundation of Martin Luther’s battle cry, "Sola Fide"—faith alone. It ignited the Protestant Reformation because, at the time, many believed that salvation depended on good works, indulgences, and human effort. Luther, through his study of Scripture, saw the truth: our justification before God is not earned but received by faith in Jesus Christ alone.
But what does justification mean? To be justified is to be declared righteous before God. It is not that we become perfect, but that through Christ’s sacrifice, God sees us as righteous. This is a legal declaration—our sins are forgiven, and we stand blameless before Him. Jesus paid the ultimate price with His blood, fulfilling what we could never achieve by our own works.
As Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:8-9, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
Our Response: Living by Faith
Though justification is a gift from God, our response to this truth matters. Faith is not just an intellectual belief; it is a trust that leads to obedience. When we truly grasp that we are justified by faith, it transforms the way we live.
In humility we recognise that salvation is not our own achievement but a gift of God’s grace, keeping us from pride and self-righteousness. This understanding leads to gratitude, as we acknowledge that Christ has done everything necessary for our salvation, prompting us to express thankfulness through worship and service. Genuine faith also cultivates obedience, not as a means to earn salvation, but as a heartfelt response to God’s love. Ultimately, justification grants us peace, allowing us to trust and rest in God’s love rather than striving for acceptance through our own efforts.
The Outcome: Peace with God
This is the greatest peace a person can experience—knowing that our relationship with the Creator is restored. No guilt, no condemnation, no fear of judgment. When this peace is settled in our hearts, everything else in life finds its proper place. Worries diminish, fears fade, and hope flourishes because we stand firm in the unshakable love of God.
It is this justification by faith, that enables us to come into the inner courts, to worship, to surrender, to be embraced and to find help times of need. This is our privilege as Christians.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of justification through faith in Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that nothing I do can earn Your love—it is freely given through the sacrifice of Your Son. Help me to respond with humility, gratitude, and obedience, living a life that reflects my faith. Teach me to rest in the peace that comes from knowing I am justified, forgiven, and accepted in You. May this truth shape my thoughts, my actions, and my relationship with You and others.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
