We are called - Romans 1:1-7 (Part 3) Called to Vocation
Romans 1:5 - "Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake."
In these words, Paul unveils a profound truth about our relationship with God—a truth that reveals not just our identity in Christ but our ultimate purpose. Our calling as believers is layered, each level deepening our connection to God and sharpening our purpose in His kingdom, ultimately bringing glory to His name.
Our first calling is to belong to God, to enter into an intimate and personal relationship with Him. This isn’t merely an invitation to faith; it is an invitation to love, to be cherished by the Creator.
Once we belong, we move naturally into a call to holiness. Holiness means living in a way that reflects the character of God, setting ourselves apart as His people.
The third level in our calling is one that fills many hearts with excitement—the call to a specific vocation or ministry. Romans 1:5 reveals that God grants us both the grace and the privilege to partner with Him in His work. Paul’s particular calling was to serve as an apostle, a bearer of the gospel to the Gentiles. But God has a unique and personal calling for each of us, one that aligns with the gifts, talents, and personality He has given us. Our vocation is the role we were designed to fulfill in God’s kingdom, whether in ministry, service, teaching, creativity, or even our everyday work and relationships. In each of us, there is a calling woven with divine purpose—a calling through which God works His love and truth into the world.
Yet, why does God call us to these various purposes? Paul explains in Romans 1:5: “to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.” Our callings are not for our personal fulfillment alone; they are pieces of God’s great mission. Through our lives, God is drawing people to Himself. Every calling, however big or small, contributes to God’s greater purpose: to bring others to faith and to glorify His name. In whatever way we serve—whether through ministry, daily work, community involvement, or family life—our actions and lives become a testimony to God’s mercy, His love, and His grace.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul gives us a timeless charge: “Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.” This directive encapsulates what it means to live fully within our calling. When we dedicate ourselves to glorifying God, our actions are transformed into worship. Our work, our service, and our relationships become expressions of reverence and love for Him. Living for God’s glory means that every part of our lives points back to Him, illuminating the world around us with the light of Christ. We become vessels through which God’s Spirit flows, empowering us to make a difference in the lives of others and to reflect His love.
To live life to the fullest is to embrace each level of our calling—to belong to God, to pursue holiness, and to live out our vocation. This path brings not only purpose but a joy that stems from knowing we are part of something far greater than ourselves. Through our calling, God invites us to be part of His unfolding plan, to help others see and experience Christ, and to glorify His name in all we do.
In Summary:
- We are called to belong—to be in an intimate relationship with God, embraced by His love.
- We are called to holiness—to grow in God’s character, allowing His Spirit to refine us and reveal His nature through us.
- We are called to vocation—to serve Him in ways that use our unique gifts, drawing others to faith and glorifying His name.
As we step into each level of our calling, let us do so with humility, gratitude, and a passion to glorify God in all we do. This is the true essence of a fulfilled life: to answer the call with faith, to live for His purpose, and to honor Him with every breath. Let us embrace our calling with joy, knowing that in doing so, we are advancing His kingdom and celebrating His glory in all things.
