Will you be found so doing? - Luke 12:42-43

Luke 12:42- 43 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

The Bible teaches us that all Christians are stewards in the kingdom of God. The parable in Mathew 25: 14-30, is a case in point. No one can say I have no part to play in God's kingdom. The office of stewardship is not the issue but the outcome of that stewardship is.

Our Lord singles out two qualities of a steward in the passage in Luke. Faithfulness and Wisdom

Numbers 12:7 - God said of Moses that he was faithful in all his house. He was faithful to God and faithful to the commission that was given to him. He was not just faithful in some things but in ALL his house. God has made us stewards in our home, church, work environment and other ministries. May we be found faithful in all the areas that we are entrusted with. Some want to do so many things and end up exhausted and unproductive. Others are not sure what to do. That is why the steward needs wisdom to choose what is God's "perfect task" for him. "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5). Not just wisdom to know what to do but also to do it wisely.

The outcome of the stewardship also depends on clarity, consistency, continuity.

  • Clarity.   The steward in the passage was clear as to his role and responsibility. He was made a ruler and given certain responsibilities. Not only was he clear about his role, he also undertook the task. Clarity of vision and engagement goes hand in hand. Clarity in vision without action remains only a dream. Action without passion results in meeting targets. Passion without Jesus results only in a life time achievement But vision, action, passion and Jesus results in “Well done thou good and faithful servant”
  • Consistency.   He was also consistent in what he was called to do. A faithful steward keeps at his commission even at times when he feels like not doing it. Even while suffering on the cross, Jesus was engaged in reaching out to the repentant thief. He kept His focus. There will be any distractions along the way. Negative remarks, competitions and unwholesome words and depressing situations, But a faithful and wise stewards will be consistent in the task given to him. Nehemiah pressed on in spite of the Sanballats, the Tobiahs, the Arabs and the Ammonites. (Neh 4:7)
  • Continuity.   Not only is a good steward clear and consistent in his life, he continues to do it to the end. Like Paul who said in 2 Tim 4:7 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith, the steward is faithful til the end because there is no retirement, no retrenchment, no retreat and no regret the service of God. Noah continued to finish the ark, in spite of the fact of the mounting ridicule from his friends.

Have we been faithful and wise stewards?. Blessed is the man whom when the Lord comes, finds him investing his time, talents and treasures in the kingdom that is to come.

"After the euphoria of new beginnings has dissipated, faithfulness is the only vehicle that would achieve the intended ending"....P.Ramachandran
