The Power of God’s Presence

“If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” — Exodus 33:15 (NIV)

I remember reading this warm story:

The Little Girl’s Wish

As the stars twinkled softly outside her window, little Emma snuggled under her warm blanket. But tonight, she felt a little scared of the dark. Her dad switched off the lights and asked gently, “Are you afraid of the dark?” Emma looked up at him and smiled softly, “No, as long as you are nearby my side.” Her dad smiled back and quietly sat beside her bed.

Emma’s eyes grew heavy, and before she closed them, she whispered, “Don’t go away daddy.” Her dad stayed right there, not saying a word, not moving,  just being there with her. And slowly, the fear melted away, replaced by a calm warmth that filled her heart. With her dad’s quiet presence nearby, Emma drifted into the sweetest dreams.

As Moses prepared to lead the Israelites toward the Promised Land, he asked for just one thing: God’s presence. Though the journey would require provision, protection, and strength, Moses knew that without God’s presence, none of those things would suffice.

Why did Moses, and the saints before us, value God’s presence above all else?

Because God’s presence is the source of all blessing and victory. It assures us that we are not alone, that our steps are guided, and that no harm will prevail against us. With God on my side, I am always victories.

  • Psalm 23:4 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
  • Isaiah 41:10 encourages, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
  • Romans 8:38-39 assures us that nothing can separate us from the love and presence of God.

David says in Psalms 16:11 - In Your presence is fullness of joy. It expresses a profound truth about the nature of God's presence and its effects on our lives. God’s Presence is a Source of Joy. The psalmist highlights that true, complete joy is found only in the presence of God. While the world offers fleeting happiness—often dependent on circumstances, possessions, or relationships—God’s presence brings a deeper, more lasting joy that transcends external factors. It's not just a temporary feeling but a steady, profound contentment.

God’s presence is greater than:

  • Our past failures or fears (Psalm 103:12)
  • His promises alone (2 Corinthians 1:20 – promises are yes and amen in Christ, but His presence is the assurance)
  • Our achievements or ministries (John 15:5 – apart from Him, we can do nothing)

What difference does God’s presence make?

With God by our side, we can face the unknown without fear. We can endure hardships knowing He is our refuge and strength. His presence transforms fear into faith, uncertainty into peace, and weakness into strength. No weapon forged against us will prosper.

As Moses said, “If your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” Let us echo that prayer today. May we seek God’s presence above all else—not just for what He can do, but because with Him, we lack nothing.

Reflection:

  • What are you holding on to more tightly than God’s presence
  • How can you invite God’s presence into your daily journey?

Prayer for God’s Presence

Lord God,

Thank You that Your presence goes before us and surrounds us at all times. Like Moses, we ask today: If Your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. Help us to seek You above all else—above our plans, our fears, and our desires. Remind us that with You by our side, we need not fear the future or the challenges ahead. Fill us with Your peace, Your strength, and Your guidance. May we learn to trust not in our own understanding or abilities, but in Your constant presence that leads us, protects us, and empowers us. Lord, walk with us every step of the way, and let Your glory be made known through our lives.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
