Managing agony or distress
One of the most difficult parts of the Christian life is the fact that becoming a disciple of Christ does not make us immune to life’s trials and tribulations.
Life has its own bouts of grief, pain, distress or agony. Agony or pain can either bring us close to God or keep us away from Him. Why would a good and loving God allow us to go through such things as the death of a child, disease and injury to ourselves and our loved ones, financial hardships, worry and fear?
For a Christian who fully understands Romans 8:28, agony is always a means of bringing one closer to God. If fact he would rather face agony that brings him closer to God than comfort that keeps you away from Him.
It was Paul M. Neuberger who wisely said, "Pain that brings you closer to God will always be better than comfort that keeps you away from Him."
This deep insight has the potential to not just enrich our spiritual journey but also strengthens our relationship with God.
Below are several ways to apply this wisdom in tangible ways, grounded in scripture.
1. Understand that God is with you in your whole journey.
- Romans 8:28 - And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.(NLT)
God was there before the distress, He is there during the distress and he will be there after the distress. He has promised never to leave us not forsake us. He is in control of the life of a believer.
2. Be assured that these season are a test of faith.
- James 1:2-3 - "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance."
When confronted with tough situations or setbacks, regard them as chances to fortify your faith and resilience. Have confidence that God is moulding you through these encounters. Through these, God is moulding your faith, your patience and your character
- Romans 5:3-4 - We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.
3. Seek divine counsel through prayer.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
The normal tendency is to fret, run to everyone else instead of God. When handling intricate situations or decisions, turn to prayer to seek God's guidance and rely on His wisdom. This approach can offer clarity and guidance for your endeavours.
Even Jesus spent time with His father before making important decisions. Shouldn’t we?
4. Seek Biblical Wisdom in times of crisis
- Psalm 119:105 (NIV): "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
The significance of biblical wisdom in difficult situation is immense. Whether it pertains to personal decisions, relationships, career trajectories, or ethical quandaries, the wisdom encapsulated in the Scriptures can influence and mould our decisions in accordance with God's intentions.
5. Seek godly counsel from spiritual leaders/mentors
- Proverbs 15:22 - Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
- Galatians 6:2 - "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ."
God has placed spiritual leaders with spiritual gifts to edify and strengthen the body of Christ. Seek counsel from those you trust with confidentiality.
6. Be assured that God can change the circumstance or give your strength go through them
- Jeremiah 32:27 - “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
This timeless truth resonates across the scriptures, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration in the face of daunting challenges. It speaks to the infinite possibilities that unfold when we place our trust in God, recognizing that divine intervention can surmount even the most insurmountable obstacles. This affirmation encourages us to approach life with faith, courage, and optimism, knowing that with God, all things are achievable.
- Isaiah 43:2 (NIV) provides encouragement for facing adversity - "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."
This verse assures believers that God will be with them during trials, protecting them from harm and giving them the strength to endure, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
7. Cultivate Gratitude.
- 1 Thess 5:18 - "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
Maintain a heart brimming with thankfulness, even amid challenges. Recognise the valuable lessons and personal growth that arise from difficult times, and extend gratitude to God for His constant presence and help.
