Sharpened for Service: When God Prepares the Instrument
"He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze." - Psalm 18:34
Before any instrument is used in battle, it must be crafted, tested, and sharpened. A dull sword is dangerous to its wielder; it can’t fulfill its purpose. In the same way, before God uses His children in significant ways, He takes them through a season of preparation—a process that often feels hidden, slow, and painful. But it’s in this season that we are sharpened for service.
Moses: Qualified, but not yet ready. Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s palace, educated, and influential. By the world’s standard, he was more than ready to lead. But God didn’t send him into ministry from the palace—He sent him to the pasture. For 40 years, Moses lived in the wilderness tending sheep. Why? Because before he could lead God's people out of Egypt, he had to be emptied of self-reliance and filled with God-dependence.
God had to mould the man before He could move through the man.
David: Anointed but not yet appointed. David was anointed king while still a young shepherd. But after the oil was poured, the trials began. Saul tried to kill him. Friends betrayed him. He lived as a fugitive in caves and wildernesses. God was sharpening David—not just as a warrior but as a leader after God’s own heart. David learned to worship in caves, to seek God in fear, and to lead men with humility.
Before David could sit on the throne, he had to be shaped in the wilderness.
Jesus: Thirty years for three. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, waited thirty years before stepping into public ministry. He didn’t rush. He wasn’t in a hurry to be seen. Instead, He grew in wisdom and favor, living an ordinary life in an ordinary town. And when the time came, He was ready. His preparation gave His ministry depth, power, and endurance—even to the cross.
Preparation seasons are not wasted; they are where power is formed.
When You ask for patience, God sends the storm. So often we pray: “Lord, make me more patient. Lord, make me stronger. Lord, use me.” And God answers—by allowing storms, delays, rejections, and tests.. Not because He’s forgotten you, but because He’s sharpening you. The battle ahead requires more than natural strength—it requires a life that's been tempered by trial and trained by trust and faith in God.
The storm isn’t sent to break you—it’s sent to build you.
Reflection:
- Are you in a cave like David, a desert like Moses, or a quiet town like Jesus?
- Does it feel like the calling is delayed or the promise is distant?
Take heart. God is not withholding your purpose—He’s preparing you for it.
Prayer:
Father, I thank You that even when I don’t see progress, You are working in me. Sharpen me for what lies ahead. Teach me to wait well, to trust deeply, and to grow in hidden places. May I be ready, in Your time, for all You’ve called me to do. Amen.
