Psalms 37:1-9 - When falsely accused
What do you do when you are taken for a ride? What if someone falsely accuses you for things you did not do? What do you do when people reward your good with evil? What do you do when you see the wicked prospering and you seem to be in the bottomless pit.
I am sure David had this questions racing his mind every time King Saul was after him. Even Jesus our Lord was falsely accused, so were the disciples. What do we do in such circumstances?
In the text above David gives some guidelines as how respond to such situations.
Firstly in verse 1-2, David challenges us not to look at the circumstances. Don't Worry or be jealous. This is because God will take care of the wicked, they will wither away. By worrying or being jealous, we fall straight into the trap the devil has set before us. In Acts 7:59, while Stephen was being stoned, he cried, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them," That's exactly what Jesus prayed when he was hanging on the cross.
Secondly in verses 3-7, he challenges us to look up to the Lord. Trust in the Lord, take delight in the Lord, commit your way to the Lord, be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.How quickly we get dishearten, discouraged, fearful when we look at our circumstances. But instead if we will only look up to the Lord, the Word promises us:
- we dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture
- He will give you the desires of your heart.
- He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun
The problem is, many times its so difficult to trust God and let Him handle the situation. But when we do it, Hallelujah, what blessings ensures.
Thirdly, David suggests that we look inwards as well. In verses 8-9, there's an introspection that we need to do. Refrain from anger because it will consume you. Don't allow it to turn to wrath because it will lead to evil. The Bible is full of such examples. Saul was jealous of David, it made him angry Eventually it turned into wrath and he wanted to kill David at any cost. It finally destroyed him and his sons. What a tragedy.
But in the case of Joseph, he looked up to the Lord, he did not allow anger or wrath come in his way and that eventually elevated him to be the 2nd in command of Egypt. What about those who wanted to destroy him? You know the story.
