Joseph - Part 3 - The Pit experience

We pick up from Genesis 37: 12-36 . We see sibling rivalry at its worst. Even when Joseph was approaching the brothers, they conspired to kill him. The reason for the homicide - DREAMS. " Then we’ll see what comes of h is dreams.” Joseph's dreams had stirred a whole lot of emotions to make the brothers to consider murder as an option. Anger, jealousy and hatred were the three root causes of such a verdict. Galatians 5: 19-21 - The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;   idolatry and witchcraft; hatred , discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. The question we need to ask ourselves is do these emotions raise their ugly heads in our lives. Then there is the tendency to clothe these as "holy anger" Do you get jealous when someone does the ministry better t...

Visit to Shadrach Home

Image
I arrived home this morning from Trivandrum, India after a tiring but fulfilling trip. Six of us from Singapore went on this trip. Dr Lim and his wife Doreen, James Ng and his wife Marylynne, Chandra and myself. Two other brothers, Suresh (Session 934/935) and Raja (M11029), both HI Alumni from India also joined us in the programs.   What a blessing to meet these brothers. These brothers had taken time off from their hectic schedule to be with us. Praise God. On 15 Aug, we visited the Shadrach Home. It was a joy to see the 21 boys again. They greeted the visitors with garlands and hugs. They were well polished in their mannerism. They have grown, picked  up a  bit of English and have shown good progress. The trainers have done a great job. These are our future missionaries. There are 21 boys now and we plan to take in a maximum of 25 by this year.  We celebrated India's Independence day with  the boys by hoisting the flag and singing the ...

Joseph : Part 2 - Parents Abode

The narrative of the life of Joseph begins in Genesis chapter 37 . As a teenager of seventeen years of age, he already had some striking qualities that set him apart from his brothers. That is why the writer in verse two, talking about the account of Jacob’s family line, chose to write about Joseph, instead of the other older brothers. In fact Joseph was the second last son of the twelve sons of Jacob. Yet his life was distinguished. In any setting, the life of a christian should always be highlighted in comparison to the rest. :"You are the salt of the earth....You are the light of the world." Daniel stood out in the Babylonian courts, so did Nehemiah in Susa.  The scriptures tell us that Jacob loved Joseph more than the other sons. Jacob made for Joseph an elaborately embroidered coat, to the envy of the other brothers. Here Jacob failed to remember the mistake made by his mother many years earlier by showing favoritism to him, which had disastrous consequences. He no...

Singapore's National Day - Prayer Requests

As we come to the close of 40 days of fasting and prayer for our nation, I will be leading my church in the following prayer request tomorrow morning. Continue to lift my country in prayer: Prayer Pointers 1.         God’s favor to be upon our nation.      ·           PM said in his national day message that in the next twenty years we still want to be the shining little red dot     ·           Psalms 127:1 - Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.       ·             Neh 1: 11 - Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by g...
