God’s Faithfulness in Our Nation - Blessed National Day Singapore

Text: “The Lord did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your ancestors…” – Deuteronomy 7:7–8

When God chose Israel, it was not because of their size, power, or wealth. In fact, they were a small, vulnerable nation surrounded by mighty empires. Yet God’s choice was based solely on His love and covenant faithfulness.

Moses spoke these words to Israel, he was reminding them of an important truth: Their survival and success When were not because of their strength, resources, or wisdom — but because of God’s faithfulness and mercy.

Singapore’s story mirrors this in remarkable ways. In 1965, we were a tiny island with no natural resources, no hinterland, and little global influence. Kicked out of Malaysia, many wondered if we could even survive. By every human calculation, our future looked bleak.

But God had other plans.

He gave us leaders with wisdom, discipline, and vision. We thank God for our founding fathers who were determined to see our nation succeed, in spite of all the challenges. They had the courage to make bold and unpopular decisions but ones that shaped Singapore, to what it is today.

God had a hand in all this.

He surrounded us with peace when war and unrest raged in the region. He granted us stability, safety, and opportunities to prosper. Today, Singapore stands as one of the world’s cleanest, safest, and most connected nations — a transformation from “third world to first” in just one generation. Few nations can tell such a story.

Like Israel, our success is not the result of our own greatness. It is the blessing of God’s hand over our nation. Our low corruption, efficient infrastructure, world-class port and airport — these are not just achievements of human skill; they are testimonies to God’s grace.

And God will see us through the future, no matter what the future may hold. The same God who brought our nation thus far, will see us through the future generations.

Reflection:

If God has done this for our nation, how much more can we trust Him with our personal lives?

Let us remember:

  • It’s not about size or strength — God delights to use what seems small.
  • It’s not about merit — God’s blessings flow from His love and promises, not our performance.
  • It’s about gratitude — prosperity must lead us to worship, not pride.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Trust for Singapore

Heavenly Father,

On this day when our nation celebrates 60 years of independence, we pause to remember Your hand upon Singapore. Just as You reminded Israel that they were chosen not because of their greatness, but because of Your love and faithfulness, we acknowledge that our story is the same.

In 1965, when we were small, vulnerable, and without resources, You sustained us. You blessed us with wise and dedicated leaders, peace among diverse communities, and opportunities to flourish. From humble beginnings, You have brought us to a place of global recognition — not because of our own strength, but because of Your gracious provision.

Lord, we give You thanks for clean governance, safety in our streets, and prosperity that few nations achieve in such a short time. You have been our refuge, our provider, and our shield.

Yet, as we look ahead, we see uncertainty. The world grows darker, and challenges loom — economic pressures, moral shifts, global instability. But we cling to the same truth that has carried us for six decades: You are faithful yesterday, today, and forever.

We ask, O Lord, that You continue to watch over Singapore. Raise up righteous leaders who fear You, preserve unity among our people, and keep us humble before You. Teach us to rely not on our achievements but on Your mercy. Let this nation be a place where Your justice, compassion, and truth shine.

We entrust Singapore’s future into Your hands. As You were with us in the past, be with us still — until the day every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord.

In Jesus precious Name we pray,

Amen.
